Let’s start with the technical definition. USSD stands for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data. So what is it to you?
You already know it from promotions/competitions/banks which say you need to dial some number, usually starting with *120*… or *130*… and so forth. These are USSD numbers/codes. USSD is a low-cost mobile phone technology which when you dial the USSD number starts a real-time/live two way interaction service that allows you to display a menu on the dialler’s phone and enables them to interact with this menu. 99% of all cell phones are able to use USSD. USSD is normally used for: surveys, competitions, mobile payment solutions, etc.

Now that you know what USSD is, good to also know is that the menu’s can be personalized. This is done my USSD Application Developers. 1. USSD numbers (also called codes) starting with *120*…# charge the session cost to the account of the person dialling (the dialler). This can be their airtime if they are on pre-paid or their service provider account if they are on contract.
2. USSD numbers starting with *134*…# are reverse charge/billed which means the session cost is charged to your (our customer) account instead of the dialler. This means *134*… USSD numbers are free to the dialler.

NB:

• A USSD session’s cost is time-based and the same no matter which mobile network the dialler is on. There are different charge rates and they depend on the type of rate charge. This can be: Standard rate (20cents every 20 seconds), Premium rate (charged at more than 20cents per 20 seconds) and reverse charge (as explained above).
• The costs are in South African Rands and applicable only to South African mobile operators.
